Anxiety are a wide variety of disorders that can interfere with daily life. The most common type is Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD, referenced here by the National Institute of Mental Health) categorized by extreme worry or nerves that occur more frequently and intensely than the average person, even if the worry is disproportionate to the situation being experienced.
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) state that "GAD may run in families, but the exact cause of the disorder is unknown. Research suggests that GAD results from a mix of genetics, brain chemistry, biology, and environment. Researchers have found that external causes, such as experiencing a traumatic event or being in a stressful environment, may put a person at higher risk for developing GAD."
Symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder include, but are not limited to, the following:
Worry excessively about everyday things
Feeling "on edge" or irritable
Difficulty concentrating
Feeling lightheaded, out of breath, or sweating
Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
A sense of restlessness or difficulty relaxing
Difficulty controlling worries or a feeling of nervousness
Physical pains such as headaches or stomachaches
