Depression (also referred to as Major Depressive Disorder) is a disorder that causes prolonged sadness, anxiety, or a sense of emptiness. People with depression may feel hopeless, a sense of guilt, and no longer enjoy the activities they once did. Changes in sleep patterns and appetite are also common with depression.
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) state that people who have witnessed or been a part of a traumatic event that experience lasting symptoms may be diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. These events can be violence, a natural disaster, or an accident. These symptoms may last for an extended period of time and interfere with daily tasks such as work and building and maintaining relationships. People with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder feel fearful or stressed even if there is no current source of danger.
