Miscarriage Awareness

Miscarriage is the loss of pregnancy before 20 weeks of pregnancy, according to March of Dimes. "It's estimated that between 10 to 20 in 100 known pregnancies (10 to 20 percent) end in miscarriage."

The Types

March of Dimes states that there are multiple types of miscarriage. Threatened miscarriage, incomplete miscarriage, complete miscarriage, asymptomatic miscarriage, and repeat miscarriages.

While we don't know what causes every type of miscarriage, it is believed there are several factors that may contribute. Problems with chromosomes, infections, and problems with the uterus or cervix can all cause miscarriage.

Risk Factors

There are wide range of risk factors for miscarriage. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Being 35 or older

  • Exposure to harmful chemicals

  • Drinking, smoking, or using drugs

  • Having two or more miscarriages in the past

  • Autoimmune disorders

  • Preexisting conditions such as diabetes or hypertension

  • Certain diseases such as kidney or heart disease
