Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a disorder caused by an extremely traumatic or stressful event. A patient can either have experienced the event itself or witnessed it, both of which can lead to this disorder that can last months, years, or even a lifetime.
Symptoms include flashbacks, anxiety, panic attacks, sleep disruptions, and can lead to comorbidity with order disorders.
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) state that people who have witnessed or been a part of a traumatic event that experience lasting symptoms may be diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. These events can be violence, a natural disaster, or an accident. These symptoms may last for an extended period of time and interfere with daily tasks such as work and building and maintaining relationships. People with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder feel fearful or stressed even if there is no current source of danger.
